Their fingers fly on the guitar, mandolin, concertina, bodhran and octave mandolin as the sounds and spirit of Ireland, the mountains and the sea weave their way around the room. From spectacular energizing performances of the "Orange Blossom Special" to the slow Dixie sway of "Goin' Back to Dixie" these Two Old Friends will take you back in time, across the ocean, and down to the bayou with their musical and vocal talents. Both Mac McHale and Emery Hutchins are natives of Maine, for nearly 15 years they founded, traveled and recorded with the Northeast Winds band and now as Two Old Friends tour the Northeast entertaining audiences both old and young.

Alpin Hong

Friday - January 26 2007

Whether playing an equally captivating interpretation of Schubert, Shostakovich or Stockhausen, Alpin Hong thrills audiences with his photo of alpin hong sitting on a grand piano startling virtuosity, unyielding artistic vision and impious style. Performing his orchestral debut with the Kalamazoo Symphony at age 10, he went on to win the 1994 Los Angeles Spotlight Awards Competition, 1993 Southwestern Youth Music Festival Competition and 1989 Stravinsky Piano Competition, all before the age of twenty.

In 2001, Hong became the first pianist in eight years to win the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, with a charismatic performance that earned standing ovations and the jury's unanimous vote. Since then, he has made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall, made solo appearances with the Santa Fe Symphony, Indian Hill Symphony and Orchestra X, and has signed a recording contract with Amsterdam-based record label, Channel Classics. Most recently, he has been touring both the U.S. and Asia, performing solo recitals as well as major orchestral works. With non-musical interests as varied as martial arts, snowboarding and skateboarding, it is no surprise that Alpin Hong offers an enthralling program that The New York Times enthusiastically once said "… went over the top, down the other side, and all the way over the top again!"

Bronn Journey

Friday - March 2, 2007 7:30pm

From the inspiring natural beauty of their Pacific Northwest home, The Journeys - Bronn and Katherine - bring you music that is nothing short of glorious! The harp is often called "the instrument of angels," and Bronn's amazing versatility and skill on this ancient instrument, Bronn and Katherine Journey along with Katherine's radiant voice will transport you to the gates of heaven itself! They are well known throughout Washington State and the Pacific Northwest, and have also performed extensively in California, Oregon, Montana and Idaho, and most recently Western Canada. Bronn has even played the National Anthem at Seattle Seahawk and Sonics sporting events.

Bronn and Katherine do not typically use a written program. They enjoy choosing each piece through interaction with the audience. At times, Katherine uses a piano to accompany Bronn, and Bronn may also choose to use his Celtic harp to add variety and spice to the music. And, although no two programs are exactly alike, humor is always a part of the program, which incorporates selections from pop, classical, folk and sacred genres. The Journeys are a spectacular duo that always incorporates the unexpected into their concerts and makes a seriously classical instrument -- the harp -- accessible to everyone.

Bay Street Brassworks

Tuesday - April 10 2007, 7:30pm

Bay Street Brassworks is fast becoming one of America's busiest brass ensembles. The trombone, french horn, tuba and two trumpets came together in 1995 in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2004, percussion was added to the ensemble, providing an invigorating rhythmic texture. This versatile band not only plays regular engagements in the Greater Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, but also tours extensively throughout the United States and abroad. Among numerous awards, they received first prize at the 2003 New York Brass Conference Brass Quintet Competition, and two Career Development grants from the Peabody Conservatory. They also serve as one of the foremost educational brass groups in the country.

Bay Street Brassworks performs pieces from a variety of genres, including classical, show tunes, Dixieland, rock, movie songs, and numerous compositions penned by the group's own members. This wide range of musical scope has resulted in an equally wide variety of engagements, from the opening ceremonies at Baltimore Orioles baseball games to world premiere performances at the 2004 Brass Chamber Music Forum, alongside the American Brass Quintet, Harvey Phillips, Gunther Schuller and Eric Ewazen. Bay Street Brassworks' seemingly endless versatility and educational outreach has resulted in programming that is consistently "in touch" with people of all ages, leaving audiences nationwide asking for more.
